Preventing Frozen Pipes

One of the most annoying problems that come with winter weather is dealing with frozen pipes. If the temperature is cold enough, the water running through your system can freeze, expand, and break your pipes. Location plays a role in what causes the issue, including: pipes exposed to severe cold, water supply pipes in unheated places, or pipes that are placed on the exterior of your home. 

One thing you can do to stop the problem before it starts is to take preventative steps. For example, when the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

If your pipes are already effected, there are also methods to thaw them. For example, apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.

When To Replace Your Smoke Detectors

Your home smoke detectors and fire alarms are some of the most important features in your home especially concerning the safety of you and your family. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, one should regularly test their smoke detectors at least once a month. Since your home's smoke alarms are electronic it only makes sense that the life of their batteries come to an end eventually. It is fairly common that when your smoke detectors battery run low you will hear a loud high-pitched beep to let you know its time for replacement. Along with reviewing your alarms manual, regular false-alarms, and frequent beeping are good indicators. Another major factor to consider is the type of smoke detector you have- battery powered or hard wired- depending on that, you will have to replace and fix them accordingly.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and if you’re not too careful, a dangerous fire can come with your family meal. In fact, in 2016, Fire Departments responded to approximately 1600 home cooking fires during the Thanksgiving holiday. Leaving cooking items unattended for periods of time is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths according to the National Fire Protection Association. So before you get ready to prepare for the big meal ahead, here a few tips to keep in mind for you and your family’s safety.

Safety tips

• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.
• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
• Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
• Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
• Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
• Keep knives out of the reach of children.
• Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
• Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
• Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.

With Autumn coming in strong this year, it is only right that everyone does their best to prepare for the chilly season ahead. From clogged gutters to messy lawns there is always measures that can be taken to ensure a comfortable fall experience. 

For starters, as temperatures decrease, it is now time to check your home heating system. It's in your best interest to schedule annual heating system check-ups. Additionally, it would be very beneficial to survey your homes vents and make sure none of them are blocked. Cleaning and replacing air filters would also be to your benefit.

It’s that time of the year where the leaves fall, the cool air sets in, and the kids are already well into the school year. Everything seems to be in place, until the flu creeps up on you and your family! Flu viruses, though common around this time, can be a very serious issue, ESPECIALLY if it’s left untreated. No need to fret, here are a few tips from the CDC to face the flu head on!

Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
• If you are sick with flu symptoms, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

Hurricane Season: What to know and how to prepare

Hurricanes are one of the most dangerous types of storms out there, trailing behind powerful winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, tornadoes, and landslides.  So many people are greatly affected each year, especially during the month of September as they become more active. Here’s how to protect your home and family during this season!

IF YOU ARE UNDER A HURRICANE WARNING, FIND SAFE SHELTER RIGHT AWAY

• Determine how best to protect yourself from high winds and flooding.
  • Evacuate if told to do so.
  • Take refuge in a designated storm shelter, or an interior room for high winds.
• Listen for emergency information and alerts.
• Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.
• Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.

Prepare NOW                

• Know your area’s risk of hurricanes.
• Sign up for your community’s warning system The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
• If you are at risk for flash flooding, watch for warning signs such as heavy rain.
• Practice going to a safe shelter for high winds, such as a FEMA safe room or ICC 500 storm shelter. The next best protection is a small, interior, windowless room in a sturdy building on the lowest level that is not subject to flooding.
• Based on your location and community plans, make your own plans for evacuation or sheltering in place.
• Become familiar with your evacuation zone, the evacuation route, and shelter locations.
• Gather needed supplies for at least three days. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Don’t forget the needs of pets.
• Keep important documents in a safe place or create password-protected digital copies.

Break-in at Local Verizon Calls for Clean up Job

A local Bowie Verizon Wireless store ran into some unfortunate circumstances when it was discovered that the shop had gone through an attempted break-in. The photograph included here shows just one of our many trained clean-up professionals at the scene of the crime dealing with the damages from the setback. When our team arrived at the scene we found a good part of the store to be covered in fire extinguisher agent. In order to ensure safety and deal with any potential health hazards, industry grade air scrubbers were set in order to filter out any potentially harmful substances in the air. Top 10 Tips for Preventing Mold after Your home is Water Damaged

Mold can grow quickly in your home.

When a flood has contributed to mold damage in a home, due to either a serious water leak in the house or a natural disaster, mold can start to develop very quickly, sometimes in just a mere 48 hours. It is true that many types of mold are relatively benign, but there are other types that can cause health problems, such as irritation of the eyes, throat, and nose. Other common symptoms that mold can cause are respiratory problems, lethargy, headaches, and vomiting. To protect the health of everyone in the home, it is crucial to start thoroughly cleaning up as soon as possible after damage has occurred.

1. Keep doors and windows open to maximize ventilation and help air dry your home. If the power is working and you know it is safe, turn on fans as well to expedite the drying.
2. Remove and dispose of any wall to wall padding and carpeting. Wet carpets can take a very long time to dry, and the underlying floor will be ruined in the process.
3. Throw out any upholstered pillows, mattresses, and furniture. These are very difficult to clean properly and take too long to dry. These are ideal conditions in which mold can grow.
4. Any wallboard that has come into contact with water should be taken out. If it is wet, it will swell up and deteriorate, providing an environment in which mold can grow.
5. Throw away any wet papers and books that do not have value. Copy any important documents, and dispose of the originals if you can.
6. Mop up ceramic and vinyl flooring with a disinfecting cleaning solution. Ensure that any underlayment is properly dried.
7. Wash or dry clean curtains and draperies according to instructions given by the manufacturers.
8. Extract as much water from hardwood floors as you can, and do this immediately. Use dehumidifiers and fans to expedite this, but do not use heat, which runs the risk of warping the floor.
9. Remove and throw out any wet ceiling tiles. Let the area dry completely before putting in a new ceiling.

The four-letter word that all homeowners, tenants, property managers, real estate agents and insurance professionals hate to hear!  Mold can be a rather difficult at times, and can have negative health effects on children, elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and those with severe allergies.  If not handled properly, it can become airborne and spread everywhere!  So, what are some of the best practices while trying to remove mold?

Do:

1. Call a professional!  All of our SERVPRO technicians are highly trained in dealing with mold and have years of experience!
2. Try to contain the mold- Keep the mold from spreading to other rooms by keeping the door closed to that room.  You can also use painters tape to seal the room at the doorway.  You may not know when you are spreading it around, so it is best to leave it alone, until a professional can examine it.
3. Wear proper protective equipment when dealing with mold- When dealing with mold, you should always wear equipment to protect yourself.  You may not be able to see mold spores attach themselves to your clothing!
4. Try to discover the source of water.  Mold (just like any other living organism) needs food, air, and water.  The only thing we can really control is the moisture in the environment.  So where is the moisture coming from?

Don'ts:

What are molds?

Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth.

What are some of the common indoor molds?

• Alternaria
• Aspergillus

Where are molds found?

Molds are found in virtually every environment and can be detected, both indoors and outdoors, year round. Mold growth is encouraged by warm and humid conditions. Outdoors they can be found in shady, damp areas or places where leaves or other vegetation is decomposing. Indoors they can be found where humidity levels are high, such as basements or showers.

How can people decrease mold exposure?

Sensitive individuals should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside homes, mold growth can be slowed by controlling humidity levels and ventilating showers and cooking areas. If there is mold growth in your home, you should clean up the mold and fix the water problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for use (see product label).

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:

• Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. Mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products will produce dangerous, toxic fumes.
• Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.
• Wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, and goggles during cleanup of affected area.
• If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. 
• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.

Specific Recommendations:

• Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
• Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
• Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans.
• Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
• Clean bathrooms with mold killing products.
• Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
• Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Bowie will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

• Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

• Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

• Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
