Preventing Frozen Pipes

12/5/2018 (Permalink)

One of the most annoying problems that come with winter weather is dealing with frozen pipes. If the temperature is cold enough, the water running through your system can freeze, expand, and break your pipes. Location plays a role in what causes the issue, including: pipes exposed to severe cold, water supply pipes in unheated places, or pipes that are placed on the exterior of your home.

One thing you can do to stop the problem before it starts is to take preventative steps. For example, when the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

If your pipes are already effected, there are also methods to thaw them. For example, apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.

When To Replace Your Smoke Detectors

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Your home smoke detectors and fire alarms are some of the most important features in your home especially concerning the safety of you and your family. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, one should regularly test their smoke detectors at least once a month. Since your home's smoke alarms are electronic it only makes sense that the life of their batteries come to an end eventually. It is fairly common that when your smoke detectors battery run low you will hear a loud high-pitched beep to let you know its time for replacement. Along with reviewing your alarms manual, regular false-alarms, and frequent beeping are good indicators. Another major factor to consider is the type of smoke detector you have- battery powered or hard wired- depending on that, you will have to replace and fix them accordingly.

Turkey Safety!

11/14/2018 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and if you’re not too careful, a dangerous fire can come with your family meal. In fact, in 2016, Fire Departments responded to approximately 1600 home cooking fires during the Thanksgiving holiday. Leaving cooking items unattended for periods of time is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths according to the National Fire Protection Association. So before you get ready to prepare for the big meal ahead, here a few tips to keep in mind for you and your family’s safety.

Safety tips
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Flu Season is here!

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

It’s that time of the year where the leaves fall, the cool air sets in, and the kids are already well into the school year. Everything seems to be in place, until the flu creeps up on you and your family! Flu viruses, though common around this time, can be a very serious issue, ESPECIALLY if it’s left untreated. No need to fret, here are a few tips from the CDC to face the flu head on!

Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.

  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • If you are sick with flu symptoms, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
  • See Everyday Preventive Actions[257 KB, 2 Pages]and Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) for more information about actions – apart from getting vaccinated and taking medicine – that people and communities can take to help slow the spread of illnesses like influenza (flu).

Hurricane Season: What to know and how to prepare

9/7/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes are one of the most dangerous types of storms out there, trailing behind powerful winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, tornadoes, and landslides.  So many people are greatly affected each year, especially during the month of September as they become more active. Here’s how to protect your home and family during this season!

IF YOU ARE UNDER A HURRICANE WARNING, FIND SAFE SHELTER RIGHT AWAY

  • Determine how best to protect yourself from high winds and flooding.
    • Evacuate if told to do so.
    • Take refuge in a designated storm shelter, or an interior room for high winds.
  • Listen for emergency information and alerts.
  • Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.

Prepare NOW

  • Know your area’s risk of hurricanes.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
  • If you are at risk for flash flooding, watch for warning signs such as heavy rain.
  • Practice going to a safe shelter for high winds, such as a FEMA safe room or ICC 500 storm shelter. The next best protection is a small, interior, windowless room in a sturdy building on the lowest level that is not subject to flooding.
  • Based on your location and community plans, make your own plans for evacuation or sheltering in place.
  • Become familiar with your evacuation zone, the evacuation route, and shelter locations.
  • Gather needed supplies for at least three days. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Don’t forget the needs of pets.
  • Keep important documents in a safe place or create password-protected digital copies.
  • Protect your property. Declutter drains and gutters. Install check valves in plumbing to prevent backups. Consider hurricane shutters. Review insurance policies.

Storm Damage Repair Tips

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

If you have been watching the news lately, you must have come across the hurricane damage that is affecting certain parts of the country. You may be wondering the water restoration and home restoration steps the people affected by the storm damage and ice damage are going to follow. You could also be amongst those who are affected by the hurricane damage or are in an area projected to suffer storm damage and flooding in the coming weeks or months. In both cases, it is important that you know how you can carry out storm damage restoration as well as storm remediation. to prevent against flooding. There are various storm restoration and home restoration tips that you can find useful. You will note that a flood pump is an essential tool to have for storm restoration.

Roof damage

Before flooding occurs, there is often roof damage in the house caused by ice damming or other factors. An ice dam is when frozen water accumulates in a place. Since an ice dam is heavy, it can lead to breakages on the roof. The strong winds can blow debris around causing roof damage. A roof leak caused by ice damage increases the chances of flooding since there are more avenues for water to come in. Storm remediation. requires that you check your roof for weak spots and strengthen it. However, should the storm damage occur, roof repair needs to be among the first steps of water restoration taken. Identify the roof leak and find ways of trapping or redirecting the flood water so that it does not accumulate and cause more flood damage. Roof damage can be identified by a visible roof leak or water stains on walls and ceiling. The wind damage and ice damage can occasion a tree to fall on your house causing roof damage. In these cases, once the storm subsides, you should check the damage caused by the roof leak and begin roof repair immediately. Sometimes, though, the roof repair process may be complicated hence necessitating professionals to come in. Be sure to call experts with extensive roof repair experience.

River flooding

If you live close to a river, you should be prepared for river flooding. This means taking storm remediation. steps early in order to prevent flood water from getting into your home. You can build barriers with sacks of sand to act as a fence against flood water. You can also dig drainage trenches around your home to direct the flood water away. Such storm remediation. steps can help to lower your river flooding insurance premiums. They can also lower the costs of home restoration. You should also know that with the river flooding, some of the reptiles such as alligators may be displaced from their natural habitat. In this case, ensure you have an impenetrable fence.

Ground water

The river flooding may contribute to the rising of ground water. If the soil cannot absorb enough, the ground water begins to swell around the home. If there are openings, it will get in and destroy furniture and other appliances. If you put enough defenses, the ground water may not rise to an extent that it is a threat to your home. However, in case of severe hurricane damage, the ground water may breach the defenses and enter the house. You should use a flood pump to remove as much of it from the house as you can. A flood pump is specialized to have enough power to remove the water at a faster rate than it is coming in. This is often the first step of water restoration and storm restoration since you need a dry home to work off from. For the flood pump to be effective, ensure you have enough fuel to ensure the home restoration process does not stop once it starts.

Wind damage

The storm restoration process may be hampered by wind damage. There is likely to be debris that is carried by the currents and this only adds to the extent of the hurricane damage. Some of the items that cause wind damage include tree branches, electric poles and other fixtures, and garden furniture. While you can take steps to secure what is around your home, some others may be blown from far away. The hail damage can also be exacerbated by the wind. The hail damage can occur when there are weak spots in the house. This can be the roof or the windows and doors. Ensure that you have fortified these areas by boarding them up with plywood. This limits the extent of both wind damage and hail damage.

Ice damage

Hail damage can be accompanied by ice damage. This might result in frozen pipes and ice dam. With frozen pipes, it means that your water supply is essentially cut off. Ice damming can encase some of your furniture and appliances while making some areas inaccessible. Before starting on water restoration ensure that all the ice damage is removed. You should leave the work of repairing the frozen pipes and removing the ice damming to professionals to avoid further damage. Do not use heat for the ice dam or frozen pipes.

You can always depend on SERVPRO of Bowie for any of your water and storm damage needs at (301)-459-0444

Mother Nature can strike at any time and at any place.  When a severe storm blows through, it can bring with it heavy rain, flooding, high winds, lightning, hail, and even tornadoes.  The damage that storms can inflict on buildings will vary depending on the type and severity of the storm.  Some of the potential kinds of damage that different storms can cause are cracked or shattered windows, roof damage from hail, damage from fallen branches/trees or even water damage from flooding. If that damage isn’t repaired quickly, interior damage, mold, and damage to equipment and inventory can follow - not to mention the disruption caused to your employees and customers.  The costs of repairs to commercial buildings, in particular, are likely to be substantial due to the high concentration of glass used in these structures. Without the full and timely payment of insurance benefits, rebuilding and repairing can be prohibitively expensive.

Common Mistakes You're Making with Your "Small" Water Damage

7/31/2018 (Permalink)

When finding themselves in the midst of a water damage event, many people immediately react by jumping in and cleaning up the mess. Beginning the restoration process as soon as possible is important but starting before you have taken the necessary steps or know exactly what you are doing could actually make things worse in the end. To help avoid these mishaps, a few of the most common mistakes in water damage clean-up are listed below. The most critical mistake to not make is failing to hire a professional restoration company to do the dirty work for you. SERVPRO of Bowie is your local expert to help you navigate the “waters”.

Mistake #1- Not Having the Job Done RIGHT the First Time

Adopting the “do it yourself” approach when it comes to water damage clean-up is often the go-to mindset. However, this is usually a more difficult process than people think. It can be a long process and following the proper procedures is very important. For example, if you neglect to begin airing out your home by opening up windows and doors for ventilation and using fans to dry things out as soon as possible, the damage will eventually be worse.

Mistake #2- Not Being Completely Thorough

As mentioned above, the water damage restoration process done right requires that you be very thorough. Cutting corners and major shortcuts will not make a big difference and can actually cause more damage. It is better to have the job done right up front, but it will not happen overnight. To ensure all the water is removed and mold will not begin to grow on and in your walls, ceilings, and carpet, you will want to make sure your contractor is certified to do the work needed in an appropriate time frame.

Mistake #3- Waiting Too Long

It can be tempting to put off dealing with flooding or water damage when it’s just a small incident, especially when life is hectic. Even minor flooding can lead to major damage in the long run. The water seeps into walls and flooring over time when not dried properly and can cause structural damage and mold growth. It’s not worth the risk to procrastinate. It could save you a lot of time, heartache, and money in the long run.

Mistake #4- Not Involving a Certified Restoration Company

Trying to tackle the water damage restoration process on your own is great undertaking. Having it done right the first time requires the proper expertise, the right equipment, and enough time to be as thorough as required. Though it may seem like you have the time and resources to clean it up, you will soon realize the process is more involved than originally thought. Should you ever find yourself in a situation where your home or business has been compromised by flooding or water damage, don’t hesitate to contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Bowie.

HOW TO STAY SAFE FROM THUNDERSTORMS

7/28/2018 (Permalink)

  • If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Go to safe shelter immediately.
  • As the storm approaches, take shelter in a building.
  • If you are driving, pull off the roadway and park. Stay in the car with the windows closed and turn on the emergency flashers. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside of the vehicle.
  • If you are inside, unplug appliances and avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Avoid taking a bath or shower, or running water for any other purpose.
  • If you are caught outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground, water, tall, isolated trees and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are not safe.

Break-in at Local Verizon Calls for Clean up Job

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

A local Bowie Verizon Wireless store ran into some unfortunate circumstances when it was discovered that the shop had gone through an attempted break-in. The photograph included here shows just one of our many trained clean-up professionals at the scene of the crime dealing with the damages from the setback. When our team arrived at the scene we found a good part of the store to be covered in fire extinguisher agent. In order to ensure safety and deal with any potential health hazards, industry grade air scrubbers were set in order to filter out any potentially harmful substances in the air. Luckily for the manager of the store, no job is too large nor is any damage too severe for our amazing team at SERVPRO of Bowie and the customer was left satisfied.

Conditions Might Be Right for Mold

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Bowie to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (301)-459-0444

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Carrollton for mold remediation services.

Top 10 Tips for Preventing Mold after Your home is Water Damaged

7/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow quickly in your home.

When a flood has contributed to mold damage in a home, due to either a serious water leak in the house or a natural disaster, mold can start to develop very quickly, sometimes in just a mere 48 hours. It is true that many types of mold are relatively benign, but there are other types that can cause health problems, such as irritation of the eyes, throat, and nose. Other common symptoms that mold can cause are respiratory problems, lethargy, headaches, and vomiting. To protect the health of everyone in the home, it is crucial to start thoroughly cleaning up as soon as possible after damage has occurred.

  1. Keep doors and windows open to maximize ventilation and help air dry your home. If the power is working and you know it is safe, turn on fans as well to expedite the drying.
  2. Remove and dispose of any wall to wall padding and carpeting. Wet carpets can take a very long time to dry, and the underlying floor will be ruined in the process.
  3. Throw out any upholstered pillows, mattresses, and furniture. These are very difficult to clean properly and take too long to dry. These are ideal conditions in which mold can grow.
  4. Any wallboard that has come into contact with water should be taken out. If it is wet, it will swell up and deteriorate, providing an environment in which mold can grow.
  5. Throw away any wet papers and books that do not have value. Copy any important documents, and dispose of the originals if you can.
  6. Mop up ceramic and vinyl flooring with a disinfecting cleaning solution. Ensure that any underlayment is properly dried.
  7. Wash or dry clean curtains and draperies according to instructions given by the manufacturers.
  8. Extract as much water from hardwood floors as you can, and do this immediately. Use dehumidifiers and fans to expedite this, but do not use heat, which runs the risk of warping the floor.
  9. Remove and throw out any wet ceiling tiles. Let the area dry completely before putting in a new ceiling.
  10. If the damage is severe, you may have to bring in a water remediation service, in order to dry your house out quickly. Keep in mind that in cases of water damage, the sooner you handle it, the higher the chance that you can stop mold from developing.

We are trained mold damage responsive specialists that can bring your home or business back to normal, with specific training and certifications to handle your restoration needs including black mold, mold removal, and household mold removal, restoration, bathroom mold, and mold cleanup.

We live and work in this community too; we might even be neighbors. As a locally owned and operated business, SERVPRO of Bowie is close by and ready to help with your mold-damaged property.

Emergency Water Tips

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Suffering a water loss can be a hectic and stressful time. Emotions run high and often times you don’t even know where to start! The first step should always be to identify the source of incoming water then shutoff or stop the water source if possible. Next make sure to turn off all electrical appliances around the affected area to reduce electrical hazards and turn off the circuit breakers supplying electricity to the wet areas. You will want to remove excess water by mopping or blotting and make sure to never use a regular vacuum to remove water! Keep furniture safe from additional damage by placing aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting/flooring and make sure to call SERVPRO of Bowie at (301)-459-0444 to come assess the damage and get the drying process started immediately.

Auto Store Mold Cleanup

6/29/2018 (Permalink)

Any business owner can tell you just how annoying it can be to have to stop production in order to deal with a water or mold damage. Unfortunately, leaving spots of water or moisture unattended, resulting in the growth of mold spores, is not uncommon and in most cases, it’s not any single person’s fault. Luckily, there is always a way to prevent the issue from occurring again and precautions one can take to make sure the likelihood of it happening in the first place is lowered.

You can't mold-proof a property, but you can make it mold-resistant. Do an audit of the property: where are the problem areas? Do you notice frequent condensation on windows? Is there a water stain on the ceiling from a persistent leak? Preventing mold from growing or spreading might be as simple as ripping up the carpet in a damp basement, installing mold-resistant products, or repairing damaged gutters. Or it may be a matter of major excavation and waterproofing. Whatever the case, address the problem as soon as possible. It might cost some money up front, but it will surely be more costly down the road if mold continues to grow unchecked.

Mold in Unexpected Places 2018

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

The mold in this home was the result of the very cold weather we experienced mixed with the warm temperatures inside of the home. This creates condensation, which is then trapped inside the window seal, eventually creating this mold buildup. This is more common than you would think and it often goes unnoticed.

The weather the past few weeks has been especially erratic and has created a good opportunity for mold to find its way into many of the nooks and crannies of your home. The best thing that you can do is to make sure all of your seals on doors and windows are tight. Mold needs water to grow and spread so the first step to prevention is cutting off the water source.

You might be thinking, “What should I do if I already have mold?” You should call SERVPRO of Bowie, we have technicians that are IICRC certified in mold remediation with years of experience. We also have specialized equipment that we use to filter the air and prevents the spreading of mold spores. So next time you come across an unknown substance that you think might be mold, you need to call SERVPRO of Bowie at (301)-459-0444

  3. People and animals that are seriously injured or burned should be transported to professional medical or veterinary help immediately.
  4. Stay out of fire-damaged homes until local fire authorities say it is safe to re-enter.
Caring for Yourself & Loved Ones
  • Pay attention to how you and your loved ones are experiencing and handling stress. Promote emotional recovery by following these tips. Discard any food that has been exposed to heat, smoke or soot.
  • Watch pets closely and keep them under your direct control.
  • Help people who require additional assistance- infants, elderly people, those without transportation, large families who may need additional help in an emergency situation, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.

Understanding WATER Types

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup. There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals. Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
  • Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.
  • Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

Mold Tips: Do's and Don'ts

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

MOLD!!!!

The four-letter word that all homeowners, tenants, property managers, real estate agents and insurance professionals hate to hear!  Mold can be a rather difficult at times, and can have negative health effects on children, elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and those with severe allergies.  If not handled properly, it can become airborne and spread everywhere!  So, what are some of the best practices while trying to remove mold?

Do:

  1. Call a professional!  All of our SERVPRO technicians are highly trained in dealing with mold and have years of experience!
  2. Try to contain the mold- Keep the mold from spreading to other rooms by keeping the door closed to that room.  You can also use painters tape to seal the room at the doorway.  You may not know when you are spreading it around, so it is best to leave it alone, until a professional can examine it.
  3. Wear proper protective equipment when dealing with mold- When dealing with mold, you should always wear equipment to protect yourself.  You may not be able to see mold spores attach themselves to your clothing!
  4. Try to discover the source of water.  Mold (just like any other living organism) needs food, air, and water.  The only thing we can really control is the moisture in the environment.  So where is the moisture coming from?

Don'ts:

  1. DONT IGNORE IT!  Mold will not go away on its own, it will burrow into a porous material and live for a very long time.  SERVPRO professionals use specialized HEPA vacuums and a special antimicrobial agent to remove and kill mold and mold spores.
  2. Don't use Bleach!  Bleach is not a good way to kill mold.  It is a temporary fix, but it will not solve the underlying problem.
  3. Put any sort of air movement on the area of concern.  This can actually spread the mold to other areas and can contaminate areas that were not previously affected.
  4. Don't stress about it!  We have seen it all and can help you with any mold problem you may be experiencing!  Give us a call anytime at (301)-459-0444

Home Fires

6/7/2018 (Permalink)

In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.

Learn About Fires

  • Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames.
  • Fire is HOT! Heat is more threatening than flames. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs and melt clothes to your skin.
  • Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.
  • Fire is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a three-to-one ratio.

Before a Fire

Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan

Smoke Alarms

A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

During a Fire

  • Crawl low under any smoke to your exit - heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect first along the ceiling.
  • Before opening a door, feel the doorknob and door. If either is hot, or if there is smoke coming around the door, leave the door closed and use your second way out.
  • If you open a door, open it slowly. Be ready to shut it quickly if heavy smoke or fire is present.
  • If you can’t get to someone needing assistance, leave the home and call 9-1-1 or the fire department. Tell the emergency operator where the person is located.
  • If pets are trapped inside your home, tell firefighters right away.
  • If you can’t get out, close the door and cover vents and cracks around doors with cloth or tape to keep smoke out.  Call 9-1-1 or your fire department. Say where you are and signal for help at the window with a light-colored cloth or a flashlight.
  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll – stop immediately, drop to the ground, and cover your face with your hands.  Roll over and over or back and forth until the fire is out.  If you or someone else cannot stop, drop, and roll, smother the flames with a blanket or towel.  Use cool water to treat the burn immediately for 3 to 5 minutes.  Cover with a clean, dry cloth.  Get medical help right away by calling 9-1-1 or the fire department.

Basic Mold Facts

5/22/2018 (Permalink)

What are molds?

Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth.

What are some of the common indoor molds?

  • Cladosporium
  • Penicillium
  • Alternaria
  • Aspergillus

Where are molds found?

Molds are found in virtually every environment and can be detected, both indoors and outdoors, year round. Mold growth is encouraged by warm and humid conditions. Outdoors they can be found in shady, damp areas or places where leaves or other vegetation is decomposing. Indoors they can be found where humidity levels are high, such as basements or showers.

How can people decrease mold exposure?

Sensitive individuals should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside homes, mold growth can be slowed by controlling humidity levels and ventilating showers and cooking areas. If there is mold growth in your home, you should clean up the mold and fix the water problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for use (see product label).

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. Mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products will produce dangerous, toxic fumes.
  • Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.
  • Wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, and goggles during cleanup of affected area.
  • If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.

Specific Recommendations:

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans.
  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
  • Clean bathrooms with mold killing products.
  • Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
  • Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.

How do you know if you have mold?

5/15/2018 (Permalink)

It’s unpleasant by itself, but this kind of smelly odor takes on a very musty scent. Anyone who notices a smelly odor like this at home or at work should go ahead with deodorization to make the smell more pleasant, but the smelly odor can’t be ignored with the constant use of deodorization. It’s a sign professional help is needed. Deodorization isn’t something that can be used for purposes other than to cover up the smell. It’s not going to get rid of the problem. Homeowners often forget that deodorization doesn’t get rid of mold or other mildew. It only covers it up and allows people to live a bit more comfortably while they ignore the real problem.

Smelly odor, mildew, fungus, and any high levels of humidity combined with a leak anywhere is a sign it’s time to get a remediation company into the home or office to handle what’s going on with everything. It’s never a good idea to ignore these signs.

One way to ensure mold is handled properly at home or work is to ensure it’s taken care of the right way from start to finish. People might not like the idea of handling mold at home with professionals, but it’s the best way to guarantee it’s handled accordingly and without issue. No one wants to find its coming back and spreading rapidly when it’s not handled correctly the first time.

Contact SERVPRO of Bowie at (301)-459-0444 for more information or concern about mold in your home.

5 Things You Need To Know About Water Damage Statistics

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

When a pipe bursts, a drain backs up, or a flood occurs in your home, it can be hard to see past the mess. A million questions will run through your mind.

What do I do now?

What’s going to happen?

Is my stuff ruined?

And the most important question of all: Will my homeowner’s insurance cover the damage?

There’s no doubt about it. Water damage is extremely stressful, and the more you know about it, the better you’ll be able to decide how to address it. Here are five things that every homeowner needs to know about water damage.

1. There are different insurance policies for flood damage and water damage.

You might think that water is water, whether it’s from flooding or a burst pipe, but flood damage is not covered under homeowner’s insurance. If you live in an area likely to experience flooding, you will probably already have a separate policy through the National Flood Insurance Policy (NFIP). When you report the claim to the insurance company, make sure to specify whether the claim is for water damage or for flood damage, so they can begin adjusting your claim correctly.

2. Not all water damage is covered by your insurance.

It is a good idea to look over your insurance policy and familiarize yourself with any exclusion to your water damage coverage. For instance, most policies cover sudden damage, like water damage from a really bad storm or from an overflowing washing machine. On the other hand, any water damage that happens because you didn’t maintain the property may be excluded, as well as gradual leaks that caused water damage over time.

3. Once water damage has happened, the clock is ticking before it gets worse.

When your property has been water damaged, you don’t have the luxury of waiting around for a convenient time to start the cleanup. Secondary damage from mold growth can present serious health risks associated with mold in the living environment.

Mold spores are everywhere, but they need moisture and a nutrient source to grow. And that is exactly what your wet carpet or drywall offers.

There is a 24 to 48 hour window from the time something gets wet until mold CAN begin to grow. After that time, mold will multiply rapidly. When mold growth is widespread, you may need the services of SERVPRO mold remediation service to safely treat and remove the mold.

To prevent mold growth, you will need to get your property completely dry again within that 48-hour window. To do this, you’ll need to contact a company that specializes in water damage restoration and emergency water extraction. They will have the professional water removal equipment and drying equipment to get the job done as quickly as possible. Many have 24-hour a day emergency hotlines, so you can start recovering your property almost immediately.

4. Your insurance company needs to know right away.

It’s a good idea to call your insurance company right away when you discover water damage. Your insurance agent can start the claims process immediately, as well as guide you through the first steps you will need to take to protect your property from more damage, like stopping the source of the water at the main water turnoff.

5. The pollution level of the water is important.

Water damage is categorized as one of three levels by how polluted the water source was that caused the damage.

Category 1: Water from a clean water source, like a fresh water line for a dishwasher. This water will not cause illness or any ill effects.

Category 2: Water that may cause illness through contact. It may have bacteria in it,

Even though water may start out as Category 1, that doesn’t mean it will stay that way. Any contamination that the water touches, such as dirty carpeting or soil from the ground, can change water damage Category to 2 or even Category 3. And since standing breeds bacteria, the longer the water is around, the worse the contamination of your property.

More contamination can mean that the restoration team will have to use more aggressive measures to clean your structure and property, and it might mean that soft furnishings, like your carpet and the carpet pad, may have to be discarded for your safety.

Water damage can be dangerous and expensive, so preventing water damage is an important part of home maintenance. But if you know the basics of what to do once it happens, you can prevent it from doing its worst.

Call SERVPRO of Bowie at (301)-459-0444 for any water damage restoration you may have.

What Causes Flooding?

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

There are many causes of flood damage in your home or business.

Anything can happen to flood your home or cause water in your business; even small accidents like a supply line break or a pipe break can cause a flooded home. Some causes are preventable, others are not. The most common causes:

  • Broken water heaters / Sump Pumps
  • Leaking pipes
  • Supply line break
  • Frozen water lines / pipe break
  • Storm water
  • Blocked Sewer Lines
  • Overflowing appliances (Bathtubs, dishwashers, washing machines)

Effects of Excessive Water?

Unless the water cleanup  and drying is handled correctly and by a professional, the devastation can quickly spread. A Water Damage Restoration Professional is experienced in the mitigation process and can save you time, money and headaches. Without them, you are exposing yourself to all types of additional problems with water in your home or water in your business:

  • Mold
  • Contaminants in the water
  • Structural problems
  • Building materials
  • Carpets and carpet padding
  • Loss of personal property
  • Electrical / mechanical problems

There is more involved than just fixing a pipe break or supply line break.

Does Your Bowie Home Have A Mold Problem?

4/17/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

SERVPRO of Bowie Smoke and Soot Cleanup

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Bowie will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
